Self-service moving could be the best of all possible worlds for some moves,
especially those that might otherwise be handled by a full-service mover. Simply
put, self-service movers will bring a moving pods to your home and leave it.
Your job is then to pack your goods and load the truck trailer. When your stuff
is loaded and tied down, a driver picks up the trailer and moves it to your new
residence. The trucking company leaves the trailer, you unload it, then they
pick it up when you're done.
There are a number of advantages to this type of move. You'll have control over
your possessions as far as packing and handling are concerned. For some folks
it's a matter of knowing that if something gets damaged, they would rather live
with that than get involved with a mover and try to get damages reimbursed. A
self-service move can be substantially less cost than a full service move and
less hassle than dealing with truck rentals. Someone else does the driving, so
you are free to drive or fly, depending on your preference and that can save you
a lot of time.
To ensure that you realize all the advantages of a self-service move:
Confirm that the mover is the motor carrier and not a broker or subcontractor.
Make sure that the company uses licensed, professional drivers.
Even if you don't have to load everything yourself, you can still hire local
help to pack the trailer and still realize significant cost benefits.
